Bamboo Fragrance (Xiang Zhu)

Recognizing that Pu-erh comes in many, many shapes, sizes and forms, this 10-inch round bamboo shoot stuffed with green or "sheng" leaves should be no surprise. First flush of spring tea, from Naka Mountain, the leaves are steam softened and then tamped into sections of bamboo.  Approximately 80 grams of leaf was hand stuffed into each shoot. then slowly fired. This traditional process imparts a delicate bamboo fragrance to the tea.  (Note: to extract the tea from the shoot, take the wrapping off, then stand it on end (the open end up); using a knife edge, push down across the opening, carefully and slowly.)  Made in 2016.

Taste profile. Our Bamboo Fragrance offers a light, almost malty taste, with a subtle note of bamboo scent.  The tea liquor is golden yellow and transparent.  As it ages, this tea will cup to orchid aromas.  Some lovers of this tea find hints of sugarcane in the aged leaves.

Brewing suggestions.   Use boiling water and between 4-5 grams of leaf for 8-12 ounces of water.  Rinse the leaves to awaken them and pour off.  Re-infuse for 2-3 minutes and taste.  Experiment up or down in leaf quantity and steep time to find the taste you enjoy.  Leaves will yield multiple steeps!

It is a small step, but it is an action we believe in and will continue to follow. Recently, we were honored by receiving the Employer of the Year Award from Integrated Community Services (ICS) for our commitment to employ persons with disabilities.

The Silk Road Teas Story

Tea is subtly aromatic with floral tones.  With aging, orchid-like aromas develop.

To create this tea - sun dried mao cha was gently stuffed into a very aromatic bamboo varietal.

  1. Intriguing light taste hanging between earthy and fruity 4 Star Review

First off, a note that it is not immediate to take the tea out of the bamboo sticks (best to split it apart and keep the tea in a separate tea container, it won't come out by itself). Also, the stick come in different size (the content should be the same weight).
This tea is very reminiscent of streamed & fermented teas. It has all the fragrance and complexity of a well oxidized tea, delivering an orange / amber brew. The smell is malty (actually, you can get the hint of a bamboo grove). A sip and you discover it has delicate notes - to me, it feels more like sugar cane and dates with a taste between earthy and some ripped fruit. It makes a pretty good beverage and for those seeking something special, this is for you.
