Haiwan "Square Tea"

This square-shaped Pu-erh offers a very tasty and creamy cup.  This pressed ripe tea was produced using small-leaf, gong ting and medium Grade 3 leaves that were sourced in the Six Famous Tea Mountains area of Xishuangbanna, in Yunnan Province. Produced in 2010.

Why we selected this tea. A 100-gram ripe cake was made at the Haiwan Tea Factory under the guidance of a well-known and respected Pu-erh tea maker, Mr. Zhou Bing Liang.

Interesting facts about this tea.  Haiwan ripe teas are known for their rich flavors and full-bodied tastes and the fact they age so well.  The blending of small, gong ting and Grade 3 leaves creates the depth of flavor and its "creamy" mouth feel.

Taste Profile. This square cake brews to a rich and creamy liquor.  One will find earthy notes and a hint of camphor.  One added note, the cake is pressed quite tight so while this will assist in slowing the aging process, care must be used when breaking it apart.

Brewing suggestions.  As mentioned above, this cake is pressed tight, so use care in breaking it apart.  For 8 ounces of water, use 5 grams of tea.  Rinse the leaves with boiling water and, if time allows, let the leaves steam or rest after rinsing them for a minute or two as this will allows the leaves to open.  Then steep in boiling water - 212 f - for 4-5 minutes.

It is a small step, but it is an action we believe in and will continue to follow.
