Red Pearls (Hong Zhen Zhu)

Type:

A high-grade Mao Feng leaf has been rolled into a shiny small pearl and oxidized to a deep brown color. The result is an unusual and rare Fujian Province black tea that is softly aromatic, offering a touch of smokiness and a light, naturally sweet finish. Cup color is a rich red and clean. Our lot is very well made, the craftsmanship is apparent. This style of black tea was once quite common but in recent years has become rare as the processing of the leaf is quite difficult.

Supporting adults with disabilities

Silk Road Teas is more than just tea. We are committed to giving back to our community by providing jobs packaging our teas to disabled adults. As the older brother of a disabled person, Ned Heagerty, Silk Road Teas President, recognized the challenges and limited opportunities disabled adults face. So he wanted to make a difference. It is a small step, but it is an action we believe in and will continue to follow. Recently, we were honored by receiving the Employer of the Year Award from Integrated Community Services (ICS) for our commitment to employ persons with disabilities.

Our award-winning teas are proudly served at these and other fine restaurants, stores and tea shops.

The Silk Road Teas Story

Logos

Traditionally, this tea was made with Mao Feng varietal. Now, mostly Oolong style leaf. We believe MF leaf offers a more interesting flavor.

The sheen on the leaf may result from rolling the pearls together, perhaps with some rice hulls.

Red Pearls tea is an unusual but yummy cup of tea. It has a distinct flavor which sets it apart from other black teas. The lovely pearls open up to steep a beautiful richly colored cup. I enjoyed trying this tea for the first time.

A satisfying cup. Rich color, I love the light smokiness. The "pearls" are fun to brew and neat.

  5. A smoky Chinese red tea 4 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Sep 2014

This tea brewed up smokier than I expected. Reminded me of a Russian Caravan blend. I brewed 2 t for 16 oz, 200 degree water for 3 minutes. I might try less time next time and see what results I get. The tea itself is beautiful, small tightly rolled little balls that uncurl when brewed.
